A Bio: Jasmine J

Greetings! A little bio about me, where do I start? I am born and raised in Australia to parents who both served in the Royal Australian Army, and I myself have served in the Royal Australian Air Force.

I was first introduced to video games in 1991 at my best friend’s house. Her parents had bought her a Nintendo, and the games Mario Bros and Ecco. I remember being in awe of it. Weekends were spent at her place playing the Nintendo and at home harping at my parents to buy us a console and games to play. They finally caved for Christmas 94, and my brothers and I just about died when we unwrapped a SEGA Mega Drive with the games Sonic the Hedgehog and Batman. All other gifts were left to the side as my brothers and I began fighting over turns. Our friend down the road had Sega games that we would borrow. It drove our parents mad. If they banned us from playing the console, we would go next door where the neighbour’s son had a Nintendo 64; and days were spent playing Street Fighter, Star Fox and Mortal Kombat.

As we got older, the Mega Drive was replaced with a Sony Playstation. Our favourite games were Final Fantasy and Resident Evil. Now we have an Xbox 360 and an Xbox One, and my husband and I enjoy watching our kids play. Epic battles have taken place in the lounge room as parents vs. kids on the Kinect. I also have a Nintendo 3DS and instead of hiding away to eat chocolate, I like to steal a bit of time to work through a level in a game – currently playing Lego Jurassic World.

My favourite six games of all time are:

Mario Bros. Why? First game I played.

Sonic the Hedgehog. Why? The game was pretty straight forward. The best bit was battling Robotnik. Sonic is an icon.

Street Fighter. Why? I totally wiped the floor with all the boys in my street – Chun-Li and I were a force to be reckoned with!

Portal. Why? So clever. So very, very clever. Plus I am a fan of Stephen Merchant.

Bio Shock. (The first one) Why? I was taken with the story – a city under the sea where people “spliced” themselves to oblivion and little sisters and big daddies roamed the creepy ruins. The art deco was awesome. Now when I hear the song La mer, I immediately think of Bio Shock.

Tetris. Why? Something about locking blocks into lines appeals to the obsessive compulsive in me.

What am I drawn to in a game? I am drawn to the story – I love a good story. The artwork is another big one for me. I am blown away with how the technology has sprinted along in the gaming industry. Where the original Resident Evil scared the bejebus out of me when it was first released, I look at it now and laugh. Yet the latest ones have me ducking for cover – too real… too…real… I enjoy problem solving – so a game with this will have me hooked for hours (I can get quite competitive and won’t let something be until I have sorted it).

What am I looking forward to now? I am eager to try the new Fall Out game, and have you seen the trailer for the game Perception (from the creators of Bio Shock)? How cool does it look?! I am also enjoying being back in a city and can now attend the games and comic conventions!

A BIG Novastream welcome to Jasmine Jarvis!
