Today is the day, the day we can finally be 100% annoyed at the fact that we don’t have those God damn hoverboards we were promised in Back To The Future. The day Marty McFly travelled to the “future”. It’s baffling and a little frustrating that there is no Google Doodle in recognition of this prestigious day but not to worry because over the years, a number of our favourite films, games, television shows and even songs have been spoiling us with a multitude of references. Here at Novastream we appreciate that this day should be celebrated and for that reason, here is a list of ten of the best references to Back To The Future throughout the years.

Spin City

For all of those people baying for a fourth instalment in the “trilogy” don’t worry, it’s already happened. On Spin City. Way back in 1999, the season 3 episode entitled Back To The Future IV: Judgement Day, Christopher Lloyd guest stars as Michael J. Fox’s mentor back from the past. As you can imagine, the references come thick and fast.

The Big Bang Theory

The Big Bang Theory gets a lot of slack but it can genuinely be a very intelligent show at times. This video is the perfect example of that statement and which nerd among us has not had a conversation similar to this with our friends?

A Million Ways To Die In The West

No matter what your opinions are on Seth McFarlane’s best attempt a western, this scene from A Million Ways To Die In The West was absolutely worth the price of admission.

Robot Chicken

Robot Chicken is essentially just a reference machine and you can have literally minutes of fun searching for Back To The Future sketches on Youtube. Doc Brown gets gangsta with JayZ, Marty points out that maybe a DeLorean wasn’t the coolest car to pick (I disagree but it’s very funny) and in this episode the Doc tries his hand at terrorism.

Family Guy

Moving over to Fox now and another show that pumps out the nerdy little nods to Back To The Future on a regular basis is Family Guy. When you are finished looking up Robot Chicken, Family Guy should be next on the list for Back To The Future jokes. For all its flaws, Family Guy is very good at a Back To The Future joke.

Doctor Who

Doctor Who needs to get a mention at least once in this article but the references in the actual show aren’t exactly amazing. Sure the films get a mention in The Shakespeare Code and have a fair influence on the letter from Blink but nothing to the extent of having Doc Brown working on the Delorean in an old barn. Fortunately, Epic Rap Battles Of History are here to save the day.

The Polar Express

When you’ve created one of the greatest film trilogies of all time, it’s very hard not to boast about it and what’s the best way to boast about it? Easter eggs. Robert Zemecki’s 2004 film, The Polar Express is loaded with Back To The Future references. Like stopping the train very close to the camera, giving Santa’s sleigh a very familiar trail and even storing a motherfluxing capacitor on the train.

Deadpool (Video Game)

From Rocket League to GTA, almost every game around is improved by having a DeLorean and only a chump would make a car game lacking in the silver beast. When you involve achievements and trophies on top of that, a nod to Back To The Future is a must. Case in point, Ratchet and Clank: A Crack In Time’s final boss trophy which is called “88MPH” and the “Outta Time” achievement from Forza 4 which you can obtain by driving the DeLorean to, yep you guessed it, 88mph. Of course, the King of breaking the fourth-wall, Deadpool can’t resist jamming one in his game.

Check Your Coat

Even music gets in on the action, with the boy band called McFly and that other boy band, Busted singing about how their neighbour, Peter had a Flux Capacitor and built a time machine, like the one from a film they’ve seen. But the winner is O’Neal McKnight for the little cameo he squeezes into his music video for Check Your Coat.

NSW Government

Possibly the most exciting of them all is this little mother. SARCASM OVERLOAD! The NSW government slipped a reference into one of their drink driving campaigns. While it’s not the cleverest reference we’ve seen, we appreciate the effort.

Honourable Mention – Jaws 19

Universal deserve a huge pat on the back for this little beauty. Released just in time for Back To The Future Day is this trailer for Jaws 19. Even though it’s a joke, some of these sound better than the real Jaws sequels.
