The Weekly Wrap February 1 -7

Another week has past us by and in the gamer world a lot can and as always has happened; hopefully you squeezed in a game or two as well.

Let’s start our weekly wrap with the games that have landed in our gamer hands in the week past. The notable release was a sci-fi strategy sequel in the form of xcom2XCOM 2. Released exclusively for PC unlike its original which also graced consoles, XCOM 2 looks to have benefitted from its ability to focus solely on PC development with a great setting combined with even greater gameplay making it a hit with gamers so far; despite the occasional glitch. If you’re a military strategist of any kind that likes sticking it to invading aliens, this game is definitely for you.

While it was a week without too many new releases it was a week full of announcements on games to come. First off their was the announcement of the next LEGO game with Star Wars: The Force Awakens set to receive the LEGO treatment with gamers able to get their annual dose of bricks June 29. Not only is the game set to explore the movie narrative in a whole new way but it will also explore the time period between Episode 6 and 7. Although we won’t be getting a new blockbuster Assassin’s Creed game on our consoles this year, our mobiles are in for a treat with Assassin’s Creed Identity, an action-RPG set to launch February 26 with the game set to take place during the Italian Renaissance. The much anticipated reboot of 90’s gamer favourite DOOM has been given a release date and a sweet collector’s edition statue too with both available May 13 this year. And finally, the publisher behind cult hit Terraria has announced its newest IP in the form of Portal Knights, a 3D sandbox RPG which will become available via Steam early access February 25.

Limited edition consoles are all the rage these days, making many a gamer regret purchasing a plain old PS4 or Xbox One. The latest of these is an Uncharted 4unchRTED4 PS4 that will release in April just in time to celebrate the game’s release.

A few weeks back Hideo Kojima was linking up with movie director J.J. Abrams, well now he’s onto another director in the form of Guillermo del Toro whom he will present a keynote address alongside for developers DICE. The pair have previously joined forces on a cancelled Silent Hill game, could a new game be in the works?

Nintendo is never far from the headlines these days with the Japanese gaming giant revealing that Wii U sales have passed 12 million units while Amiibo sales have reached well over the 20 million mark. One other Nintendo announcement made during the week was that their next mobile game will feature an iconic character, who do you most want this to be?

From one console giant to another and PlayStation has decided to bring back Vote to Play. The initiative allows the public to vote on three selected games with the most popular of these added to the next month’s PlayStation Plus line-up. For March gamers must decide between; Assault Android Cactus, Action Henk! and Broforce.

As one of the games of the decade, its not too surprising to hear that GTA 5 has now sold over 60 million copies. Will it get to that magical 100 million mark?

One game that hasn’t quite conquered like it would’ve hoped was Batman: Arkham Knight which after a horrid PC release which is still plagued by bugs, will not be releasing on Mac and Linux as originally planned. Gamers who have pre-purchased the game have been told to seek refunds.

headerAnd finally, Rainbow Six Siege has received its first major update but rather than making things smoother, has reportedly led to a number of glitches. Is this Tom Clancy shooter not being given the attention it deserves as The Division prepares to release?

To eSports news and many a soccer fan will spend hours playing FIFA harbouring a dream that one day a professional club will come knocking. Well for an English teenager that dream has become a reality with heavy weight German club Wolfsburg hiring the pro FIFA player in a bid to expand their club into the field of eSports. The teenager won’t play for Wolfsburg or likely ever meet the players however with the contract allowing him to remain in England albeit wearing Wolfsburg gear to tournaments.

It’s raining games this week with Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm releasing across the PS4 and Xbox One February 9, something Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: Russia, will do likewise. February 9 is a very big day this month for releases with Firewatch for PS4 also releasing along with Dying Light: The Following finding its way to PC and Xbox One.

And that my fellow gamers, was the week that was, game on!
