Microsoft has kicked off 2026 with a packed Xbox Developer Direct showcase, offering fresh looks at some of its most anticipated upcoming titles.
The presentation featured new footage and details for Playground Games’ Forza Horizon 6 and Fable, Game Freak’s surprising new action project Beast of Reincarnation, and an unexpected reveal from Double Fine in the form of Kiln.
Here’s a full rundown of everything announced during Xbox Developer Direct 2026.
Forza Horizon 6
The showcase opened with a deep dive into Forza Horizon 6 from Playground Games. As previously revealed, the open-world racer is set in Japan, with players beginning their journey as a tourist who works their way into the Horizon Festival.
Playground confirmed this is the largest map the Horizon series has ever seen. The studio worked closely with consultants to ensure an authentic depiction of Japan, and the development team travelled to the country to gather extensive reference material.
Forza Horizon 6 features hundreds of vehicles, a more balanced car roster, and new cosmetic tyre wear options. Customisable garages are available at every playable house, and players can invite friends to check out their builds.
Your estate begins as an overgrown, empty property, but you can build directly in the open world, and everything you construct can be visited by other players. It’s an unexpectedly cosy, Animal Crossing-like twist for the franchise. Based on what was shown, Forza Horizon 6 is shaping up to be one of the most visually impressive entries yet.
Beast of Reincarnation
Next up was Beast of Reincarnation, a brand-new action game from Pokémon developer Game Freak.
Directed by Kota Furushima, the game is a major tonal and stylistic departure for the studio. Players step into the role of Emma the Sealer, journeying through a post-apocalyptic Japan in a desperate bid to save humanity from extinction.
Beast of Reincarnation launches in summer 2026 on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5, and will be available day one on Xbox Game Pass.
Kiln
Microsoft followed with a surprise reveal from Double Fine Productions. Studio head Tim Schafer introduced Kiln, an online multiplayer “pottery party brawler” where pots transform into playable characters via an in-game potter’s wheel.
Schafer described Kiln as being about creating with other players before gleefully destroying everything. The game promises high-energy, expressive multiplayer action and a distinctly Double Fine sense of humour.
Interestingly, Kiln was first discussed publicly back in 2017, making this more of a long-awaited re-reveal. It’s set to launch in spring 2026 on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC, with a closed beta coming soon. Double Fine also confirmed it will continue updating the game post-launch.
Fable
The show closed with the headline attraction: Fable.
Playground Games has assembled a dedicated new team to reboot the beloved RPG franchise, continuing the legacy of Lionhead Studios, which Microsoft shut down in 2016.
Players begin as a child growing up in a quiet rural village, destined to become Albion’s first hero in a generation. The game features a true open world, with full freedom to explore wherever you like from the outset.
The showcase offered a solid look at character customisation, combat, and kicking chickens. Combat blends melee and ranged attacks with powerful magic, while familiar creatures like Hobbes return.
Outside of combat, Fable leans heavily into life-sim elements. You can buy houses, take on jobs, earn money, romance villagers, marry, and raise children. Playground described it as “a game within a game”.
Albion’s “living population” consists of around 1,000 fully voiced NPCs, all of whom go about their daily lives. You can speak to any of them, hire them to work in your businesses, or evict them as a landlord. NPCs will react to your choices through a new reputation system, and some decisions will permanently alter the world.
Fable launches in autumn 2026 on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5.
That wraps up Xbox Developer Direct 2026. Four major games, all due out this year. Which one are you most excited about?
