Samus Aran is officially back. Nintendo has launched Metroid Prime 4: Beyond today on both Nintendo Switch 2 and the original Nintendo Switch, marking the long-awaited return of one of gaming’s most iconic heroes.
In Beyond, Samus finds herself stranded on Viewros, a mysterious and hostile alien planet, after a disastrous encounter with elusive bounty hunter Sylux. Cut off from familiar territory and facing new threats, Samus must once again explore labyrinthine environments, uncover ancient secrets, and evolve her arsenal in order to escape alive.
New Psychic Powers Shake Up the Prime Formula
Early in the adventure, Samus is granted psychic abilities by the Lamorn, an ancient race that once inhabited Viewros. These powers allow her to manipulate mechanisms, redirect charged-shot trajectories, and unlock areas previously thought inaccessible—opening up new layers of traversal and puzzle-solving across the planet.
Meet Vi-O-La: Samus’ New Planet-Roving Vehicle
Samus also gains access to Vi-O-La, a high-tech rideable vehicle equipped with weaponry and planet-scanning tools. It’s designed to help her cover ground quickly and fight off the increasingly aggressive wildlife and enemies scattered throughout Viewros. She won’t be entirely alone either, with several Galactic Federation Troopers unexpectedly transported to the planet and will lend assistance as the crew searches for a way home.
Switch 2 Enhancements: 4K, 120fps, HDR and Mouse-Style Controls
The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition arrives with a suite of platform-specific upgrades, including:
- Mouse-style controls via Joy-Con 2
- Higher resolution visuals and improved framerates
- HDR support for deeper contrast and more vivid colour
- A Quality Mode offering up to 4K resolution in TV mode
- A Performance Mode supporting up to 120fps for ultra-smooth gameplay
These enhancements aim to deliver the most technically advanced Metroid Prime experience to date, while still offering a fully playable version for original Switch owners.
