State of Play : First Light

IO Interactive has pulled back the curtain on 007 First Light, a fully re-imagined James Bond origin story set to launch on March 27, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro. Revealed during a special State of Play showcase, the game promises to deliver an original take on the world’s most famous spy, blending cinematic espionage with action-packed gameplay.

A Fresh Take on Bond

Unlike adaptations of existing novels or films, 007 First Light has been built from the ground up in IO Interactive’s Glacier engine. The developer, best known for the Hitman series, is aiming to capture both the tense subtleties of spycraft and the explosive spectacle that defines the Bond franchise.

Two missions were shown during the presentation: a covert operation set against the backdrop of a high-stakes chess tournament in Slovakia, and an elaborate infiltration of a gala in Kensington, London. Both showcased IO’s focus on immersion, cinematic design, and the freedom to approach objectives in multiple ways.

Play Bond, Your Way

IO is introducing what it calls the Creative Approach, allowing players to choose how they tackle each mission. Options range from slipping by unnoticed to unleashing full-scale chaos with weapons and gadgets — or improvising somewhere in between.

Bond’s skillset is divided into three pillars:

  • Spycraft – the quieter side of the job, including surveillance, pickpocketing, and environmental clue-hunting.
  • Instinct – a resource that reflects Bond’s adaptability, letting players bluff through suspicious encounters or slow time for precision shots.
  • Gadgets – classic tools from Q Branch, such as hacking cameras, lasers to cut through locks, and distraction devices, all evolving as the game progresses.

Combat has been designed to feel true to the character, moving seamlessly between precision gunplay, melee takedowns, and gadget use. Bond’s “License to Kill” mechanic escalates encounters further, allowing efficient transitions into firearm combat when situations spiral out of control.

More Than Gunfights

The developers also highlighted vehicular gameplay, with high-speed driving sequences playing a key role in both chases and cinematic set-pieces. Classic Bond-style spectacle will be woven throughout, with IO teasing moments such as mid-air combat after being thrown from a plane.

Meet the New Bond

The cast includes a mix of rising and established talent:

  • Patrick Gibson as James Bond
  • Priyanga Burford as M
  • Alastair Mackenzie as Q
  • Kiera Lester as Miss Moneypenny
  • Lennie James as Bond’s mentor, John Greenway
  • Noemie Nakai as Miss Roth

Together, they bring voice and motion capture performances intended to ground the game’s larger-than-life story with authentic character work.

Release Date and Pre-Order

007 First Light will launch on March 27, 2026, with pre-orders available now. Players who reserve the game early will receive a complimentary upgrade to the Deluxe Edition.
