People Worthy of Love

Novastream rarely gets political. We like film, television, games and more that indulge us in fantasy and superheroics and awesome action set pieces. We’re not in the business of commenting on proposed legislation in Canberra. But this isn’t the time to stay silent on such an important matter.

So I scrolled through my Netflix ‘previously watched’ and collated a series of fictional characters that deserve to be treated as equal citizens in the eyes of the law.

ANNALEISE & EVE / CONNOR & OLIVER – HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER

Four lawyers just trying to get away with murder.

KEVIN AND JAOQUIN – RIVERDALE

The sherriff’s son and the guy from the wrong side of the tracks.

JOSH/ ARNOLD/ HANNAH / JEFFERY / PATRICK – PLEASE LIKE ME

The perfect depiction of life in Australia.

BILL / JACK / VASTRA & JENNY/ EVERYONE ELSE ON DOCTOR WHO

Sexuality matters and doesn’t in Doctor Who, as in real life.

MICHELLE – GILMORE GIRLS

Where you lead he is legally unable to follow, taking the zing out of the theme song.

SARAH, NYSSA & CURTIS – ARROW

+ Maggie & Alex from Supergirl + Pied Pieper from The Flash.

HALF THE CAST, INCLUDING POUSSEY, SOSO, STELLA, BOO, PIPER, ALEX, SUZANNE, MORELLO, NICKY, PISCATELLA – ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK

Equal marriage is inevitable.

JERI HOGARTH – JESSICA JONES

This dumb postal vote was not.

CPT HOLT AND KEVIN – BROOKLYN NINE-NINE

Cpt Holt is all of us.

MAXXIE, TONY, NAOMI, EMILY, ALEX – SKINS

The list of characters just goes on…

IAN, MICKEY & THE NEIGHBOURS – SHAMELESS

& on…

COSIMA & DELPHINE – ORPHAN BLACK

…& on & on & on.

TITUS & MIKEY – UNBREAKABLE KIMMY SCHMIDT

Because even though all these characters are fictional, it may shock Canberra to realise LGBT+ people actually exist.

PRESIDENT FRANK UNDERWOOD – HOUSE OF CARDS

And some of them are damn iconic.

DUMBLEDORE – HARRY POTTER

The only man that Voldermort ever feared got his heart broken by Gellert Grindelwald. And yet he doesn’t deserve to marry?

THEY NEED TO SORT OUT THEIR PRIORITIES – Ron Weasley*

*Not gay, but a staunch ally. And the quote fit really well.

JANET KING – JANET KING

This isn’t even a definitive list. It’s literally whatever was on my Netflix account. Jane the Virgin, Modern Family, Glee, Queer as Folk, Grey’s Anatomy, Once Upon a Time, All My Children, Brothers and Sisters, The 100, Six Feet Under, Pretty Little Liars, Days of Our Lives, Game of Thrones, Family Guy, Lost Girl, The L Word, Ray Donavan, Buffy, The Fosters, Gossip Girl and honestly 573 shows I can’t think of are representing gay men and women really well.

It’s a shame our government is not.
