DO A BARREL ROLL! Star Fox is Getting a Massive Switch 2 Reboot This June

If seeing Fox McCloud tear through the skies in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie had you itching to jump back into an Arwing, Nintendo just delivered. During today’s Nintendo Direct, it was officially announced that Star Fox is blasting its way onto the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 25th—and this isn’t just a simple port of the N64 classic Lylat Wars.

Built to flex the power of the Switch 2, this new Star Fox is a ground-up cinematic reimagining. The Lylat System has been given a massive visual overhaul, featuring diverse, highly detailed planets—from the neon-lit world of Corneria to the toxic oceans of Zoness. Backed by a sweeping orchestral soundtrack, the game also introduces fully voiced, cinematic cutscenes and all-new mission briefings to dive deeper into the franchise’s lore.

At its heart, this is the fast-paced, laser-blasting space combat fans know and love. You’ll be boosting, braking, and (of course) doing barrel rolls to shake off enemies. Campaign Mode brings back the iconic branching paths system, where your performance and choices actively alter your route through the galaxy, offering massive replayability. For those wanting an extra test of skill, a brand-new Challenge Mode throws unique, mode-exclusive objectives your way.

But where this reboot really shines is how it utilises the Switch 2’s hardware:

  • Joy-Con 2 Mouse Controls: Solo players can seamlessly swap between traditional buttons and intuitive mouse-style aiming using the Joy-Con 2.
  • Co-Op Flight: If a friend jumps in locally or online, you can split the duties—one player flies the Arwing while the other handles the gunner seat.
  • GameChat AR: Getting social? The new GameChat integration lets you use AR accessories to throw on virtual Star Fox ears or a Falco beak that maps to your real-life expressions while you talk to your squad.

If you want to settle the ultimate score, the brand-new Battle Mode features 4-v-4 dogfights. Up to eight players can split into Team Star Fox and Team Star Wolf across three objective-based stages (including turf wars on Corneria and cargo heists in Sector Y). Plus, with Nintendo’s GameShare feature, up to four players can fly together locally across both Switch 2 and original Switch consoles, or take the fight online (Switch 2 only).

Star Fox launches exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 25th. You can check out the full reveal over on the Nintendo AU YouTube channel.
