Max : What to Watch First?

Another year, another streaming service launches. For us in Australia Binge has been the home of HBO and Warner Bros Discovery content for the last few years, and now as their contract has expired, they have launched a local version of the USA Streaming service Max. Any new service that launches has an overwhelming amount of content, so we dived deep into the launch titles and broke it down for some great things for the entire family to watch. Blockbuster Movies

  • Juror #2 – directed by Clint Eastwood, this courtroom drama stars Nicholas Hoult and Toni Collette in one of the most intense films.
  • Beetlejuice Beetlejuce – this sequel surprises with a great story and a new generation ready to be creeped out by Michael Keaton’s disgusting Beetlejuice. You can read our review here
  • Twisters – Aussie’s didn’t flock to this at the box office, yet this is a solid sequel with some great special effects and plenty of Glen Powell. You can read our review here
  • Trap – M Night Shymalan’s twisted story is a great outlet for actor Josh Hartnett. Read our full review here
  • The Parenting – Lisa Kudrow, Eddie Falco and Parker Posey star in the comedy horror film that will have you laughing out loud.
  • The Colour Purple (2024) – this musical remake has some phenomenal performances and memorable songs. You can read our full review here

HBO Series

  • Euphoria – an all star cast including Zendaya and Sidney Sweeney lead a cast of students struggling with drugs, love, social media while establishing their identity.
  • The Last of Us – one of the biggest shows of 2023, the adaptation of the Playstation game turned into a massive hit.
  • Chernobyl – a series based on the 1986 nuclear disaster focuses on the heroes and the devastation that lay behind.
  • The White Lotus – this brilliant take on a luxury resort chain, dives into the lives of its visitors and the scandal of the rich and famous.
  • Succession – A satirical black comedy on a family who own and operate a media company. The four seasons of this show are critically acclaimed and loved by audiences worldwide.

Documentaries

  • Super/Man The Christopher Reeve Story – a documentary based on the life of Christopher Reeve. His rise to meteoric fame and the infamous accident that crippled him and changed his family dynamic. You can read our review here
  • I Love You, Now Die : The Commonwealth V Michelle Carter – Michelle Carter stands trial for sending aggressive texts to her boyfriend encouraging suicide before he was found dead by suicide in his car. This two part documentary film will have you on the edge of your seat.
  • Beware the Slenderman – The mythos of a faceless, digital-age bogeyman known as Slenderman was created on the Internet, but his influence was felt in the real world when two 12-year-old girls lured their friend into the woods for a brutal murder.
  • Paradise Lost – Based on a gruesome crime story wherein the mutilated bodies of three 8-year-old boys are discovered in a shallow creek in West Memphis, Arkansas.
  • Class Action Park – Explores the legend, legacy, and truth behind New Jersey’s Action Park and its reputation as the world’s most insanely dangerous amusement park.

Kids

  • Tiny Toons Looniversity – the reboot of the classic series, Babs, Buster and friends enroll at Acme Looniversity, the premier institution of higher hijinx learning.
  • What’s New Scooby Doo? – A reboot of the classic TV series, the two seasons of this hit show are great to introduce a new generation to the Mystery Inc.
  • My Adventures With Superman – this anime reinterpretation of Superman set in Metropolis, is a fantastic reimagining of the greatest superhero.
  • Tom and Jerry in New York – the cat and mouse are back for new adventures after the events of their latest movie.
  • The Looney Tunes Show – classic episodes of the animated characters that built a studio, you can catch Bugs Bunny and gang on Max.

Max Originals

  • The Pitt – a medical drama examining the problems of modern healthcare in Pittsburgh.
  • Love & Death – Elizabeth Olsen stars in this drama mini-series about an affair that rocks a town.
  • The Flight Attendant – Kaley Cuoco stars in this dark comedy about a flight attendant caught up in espionage.
  • The Staircase – Author Michael Peterson’s life turns upside down when he becomes the prime suspect in the death of his wife, Kathleen. Soon, his ordeal turns into a harrowing tale of never-ending court trials.
  • Julia – a series on the life of famous American French chef Julia Child. Season 1 is perfect, while Season 2 is a little slow.

DC Comics

  • All Star Superman – Overdosed with solar radiation, Superman is dying and he plans to spend the rest of his remaining life fulfilling his dream. But with Lex Luthor having evil plans, Superman must stop him. This 2011 animated film has remained a classic.
  • Batman The Brave & The Bold – a fun and camp take on the dark knight has many characters from the DC universe appear in each episode.
  • The Arrowverse – Arrow, Batwoman, Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl, The Flash – The CW had a connected TV universe of superheroes and Max has some of the best ones, you can catch complete seasons of these shows.
  • The Penguin – Colin Farrell gets his own series as the king of the Gotham’s underworld. A slow burn but essential viewing.
  • Krypton – what was the home of Superman like before it exploded? This series explores the life of a young Jor-El in a Game of Thrones style political thriller.

TV Shows

  • The Other Two – a comedy sitcom about a family destined for fame and celebrity. Starring Molly Shannon, this show is pure perfection.
  • The Righteous Gemstones – A world-famous televangelist family, the Gemstones, do not practise what they preach and use their ministry to fulfil their selfish motives and hide shocking secrets. This four season series has become a HBO staple.
  • Creature Commandos – the first series in James Gunn’s new DCU. This adult animated series has a lot of laughs and heart.
  • Peacemaker – John Cena gets his own spin-off as the merc who will do anything for peace.
  • Harley Quinn : The Animated Series – a very adult series showing Quinn’s rise in Gotham as she attempts to become the city’s biggest villain.

Reality TV

  • Selena + Chef – pop star Selena Gomez joins a famous chef in week in order to learn how to cook. Originally started in the pandemic, this has some great celebrity chefs, great food and a lot of laughs.
  • Paul American – Logan Paul lets the cameras in on his family to showcase their lives in the style of the Kardashians.
  • Love in Paradise – Four couples find love in the Caribbean and attempt to keep things going as they go back to their normal life.
  • On The Roam – Jason Momoa travels across the USA on motorbike to meet some extraordinary people.
  • Ghost Adventures – Paranormal investigators Zak Bagans, Aaron Goodwin, Billy Tolley and Jay Wasley have 28 seasons of their adventures, so many investigations, so little time.

TCM

  • The Wizard of Oz – the classic film that bought colour to the world of cinema. Judy Garland stuns in this family musical that will send you over the rainbow.
  • Mildred Pierce – Joan Crawford’s award winning role in this classic story of a mother looking after her two children after a marriage breakdown.
  • Dial M for Murder – one of Hitchcock’s classics, this 1954 crime thriller starring Grace Kelly will have you on the edge of your seat till the very end.
  • Nightwatch – Elizabeth Taylor stars in this 1974 old-fashioned thriller.
  • Casablanca – this war/romance starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman is one of the greatest love stories ever made.

Adult Animation

  • The Lord of the Rings : The War of the Rohirrim – an underrated film that flew under the radar at the box office last christmas, this anime story set in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings Universe has some great performances.
  • Samurai Jack – this sci fi action series was on the air for 17 years thanks to its beautiful animation and stories you’ll fall in love with.
  • Creature Commandos – James Gunn brings his first DCU project to Max with this band of loveable rejects doing Amanda Waller’s work.
  • Mortal Kombat Legends – based on the game series of the same name, this second installment in the film series has some incredible animation and martial arts.
  • Rick and Morty – a grandfather and grandson head out on some crazy intergalactic adventures. This long running series continues to break pop culture boundaries and entertain its millions of fans worldwide.
