Melbourne Women in Film Festival unveils its 10th anniversary program

0

The Melbourne Women in Film Festival is returning to Melbourne from 19-23 March with a massive lineup of world-class features, shorts and special events, cementing its reputation as a vital platform for female and non-binary voices on screen.

There is a massive opening night with the outrageously funny animated feature Lesbian Space Princess (you can read my interview with the incredible filmmakers here) the film won the Teddy award at the Berlin International Film Festival. The creative team will host a conversation during the festival talking about artistic vision, collaboration and representation.

The Offing is a striking debut from Melbourne filmmakers Lily Lunder and Koko Crozier which signals an exciting new generation of storytellers. Jane Campion’s Sweetie gets a special 4K restoration in collaboration with ACMI and the National Film and Sound Archive.

New documentary Make It Look Real: Inside Intimacy Coordination follows intimacy coordinator Claire Warden and director Kieran Darcy-Smith, examining the evolving role of intimacy coordination in contemporary screen storytelling. There will be an industry panel accompanying this one, and we are sure there will be a lot of discussion and provocative opinions!

Another feature filmed, Kōkā marks a major step for Māori language representation on screen and is the feature debut from writer/director Kath Akuhata-Brown.

The film is described as a lyrical road movie rooted in healing, ancestry and identity. The film has premiered and featured in international festivals, including the Hawaii International Film Festival and the Māoriland Film Festival, where it won the People’s Choice Award.

Elsewhere in the programs are two packed shorts packages, including Freshly Squeezed 1 and 2, Reel Shorts, Next Gen Shorts and the MWFF shorts awards. It truly is a packed schedule this year, and we cannot wait to see the incredible films on screen at this year’s festival.
