After nearly a decade, the Thieves Guild is back in the spotlight as ESO launches its ambitious first season of content, featuring Sheogorath, underwater exploration, and a heavy dose of nostalgia.
ZeniMax Online Studios is turning back the clock today with the launch of Season One: Return of the Thieves Guild. Available now across PC, Xbox, and PlayStation, this inaugural season represents a significant shift in how The Elder Scrolls Online delivers its narrative, moving toward a “Seasonal” model where all content is free for every player.
The headliner, of course, is the long-awaited return of the Thieves Guild. This is the first dedicated story content for the iconic faction since 2016. Set in the Glenumbra zone of High Rock, the new narrative builds directly on the original DLC’s foundation. While it is open to everyone, veterans who wrapped up the 2016 storyline will find themselves rewarded with unique dialogue choices and expanded narrative branches.
Beyond the Heist: Favors and Dynamic Encounters
It isn’t just about sticking to the shadows today. ESO is introducing two new ways to interact with the world:
- Favours: A fresh take on daily quests accessible via “Freerunner’s Post Boards.” These arcs focus on fan-favorite characters across Tamriel, offering unique rewards for those who see their stories through to the end.
- Dynamic Encounters: Moving away from standard “kill-the-mob” world events, these are multi-stage, story-driven scenarios that trigger naturally as you explore. No menus required – if you’re close enough, you’re in.
A Summer of Madness and Mystery
The roadmap for Season One looks packed well into the rest of the year. On July 29, the Daedric Prince of Madness, Sheogorath, returns for a mind-bending questline. The Prince is reportedly attempting to “experience mortal life,” which, knowing Uncle Sheo, likely means plenty of chaos and an unhealthy amount of cheese.
September 21 marks the next major drop, introducing the Nowhere Vault. This isn’t just a lore dump; it’s a new playable space between realms that emphasizes puzzles and traversal mechanics that ZeniMax claims have “never been seen before” in the MMO.
Hardcore fans of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind should also keep an eye on the “Rumors” system launching that same day. These are map-marker-free scavenger hunts that require players to actually read clues and navigate the old-fashioned way. This drops alongside Crimson Veldt, a new 12-player trial for the end-game crowd.
Testing the Waters: The High Seas
Perhaps the most experimental addition arrives at the tail end of the season. From September 30 to October 14, the High Seas of Tamriel event will hit the Gold Coast. For the first time in ESO’s history, players will engage in naval combat and underwater exploration.
While currently billed as an “experimental event,” the success of these mechanics could dictate the future of traversal in Tamriel.
Season One: Return of the Thieves Guild runs from today through October 21. All content is free for all ESO players.
