Nintendo is celebrating the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. in style, with two of the plumber’s most beloved adventures making their way back into orbit. As of today, Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 are available on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, bringing their gravity-defying platforming into a new generation.
A Return to the Stars
Players can once again take control of Mario as he soars across galaxies, partnering with Yoshi, collecting Power Stars, and facing off against Bowser in one of the most imaginative 3D Mario outings ever created. These new releases combine enhanced visuals with a suite of upgrades, including:
- New Storybook Chapters expanding Rosalina and the Lumas’ backstory.
- Assist Mode to help players with extra health and recovery options.
- AutoSave functionality to make adventuring smoother.
- Soundtrack Mode featuring newly added tracks.
Both button and motion controls have been adapted for Joy-Con and Joy-Con 2, preserving the original Wii experience while giving players more flexibility.
Extra Features for Switch 2
On Nintendo Switch 2, a free update will introduce 4K resolution support for both titles. Fans can purchase the games as a bundled physical release, Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2, or grab them individually on the Nintendo eShop.
Amiibo & Collector’s Storybook
Two new amiibo figures will join the collection on April 2, 2026. The larger-than-standard Mario & Luma amiibo grants a Life Mushroom, while the Rosalina & Lumas amiibo provides a 1-Up Mushroom.
Meanwhile, fans of Rosalina’s tale can look forward to an illustrated hardcover edition of Rosalina’s Storybook, arriving on November 25, 2025. Pre-orders are open now via My Nintendo Store and select retailers.
A Huge Year for Mario
Today’s release is just the beginning of a massive celebration for Mario’s 40th anniversary. Nintendo has teased even more to come, including:
- The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, launching worldwide in April 2026.
- Mario Tennis Fever, set to release on February 12, 2026.
- Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, due in autumn 2026.
With the return of two legendary Wii titles, enhanced for modern consoles, Mario fans both new and old have the perfect excuse to blast off into the stars once again.
