The Deb Trailer finally lands

Rialto Distribution has released the first trailer for The Deb, a brand-new homegrown musical comedy and the feature directorial debut of Rebel Wilson, will hit cinemas nationwide on January 15 2026. To celebrate the announcement, the official trailer has dropped, offering a first look at the film’s heartfelt humour, vibrant musical numbers, and uplifting spirit.

Set in the drought-stricken rural town of Dunburn, The Deb follows farm girl Taylah Simpkins, whose long-held dream of shining at the local Debutante Ball is thrown into chaos with the arrival of her city cousin, Maeve. Quick-witted, outspoken, and unimpressed with Dunburn tradition, Maeve labels the event a “heteronormative shit-show” and inadvertently upends the town’s expectations. What begins as a clash of personalities soon becomes a warm, funny and music-filled journey about friendship, identity, and finding the confidence to step into your own spotlight.

The film boasts a powerhouse creative team led by Wilson, whose move behind the camera signals an energetic new chapter in her career. The screenplay, penned by award-winning writer Hannah Reilly, injects the story with sharp contemporary Australian humour, while original songs by acclaimed musician Meg Washington elevate the emotional beats and comedic chaos alike.

Behind the scenes, The Deb is produced by Gregor Cameron, Amanda Ghost, David Jowsey, Greer Simpkin and Wilson, with executive producers Vince Holden, Len Blavatnik and Danny Cohen steering the project’s cinematic ambition.

The cast brings together a bright mix of rising stars and familiar faces, including Natalie Abbott, Charlotte MacInnes and Stevie Jean, supported by Shane Jacobson, Tara Morice and Wilson herself. Their performances carry the same joyous, big-hearted spirit that defined iconic Aussie crowd-pleasers such as Muriel’s Wedding, The Sapphires and The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

With its upbeat soundtrack, heartfelt storytelling and unapologetically Australian charm, The Deb looks primed to become the country’s next musical favourite.

The Deb opens in cinemas across Australia on January 15, distributed by Rialto.
