Podcast Of The Week: Adam And Joe

There’s something special about a niche or cult fandom that makes you feel all nice and cosy. It’s as if you and a select few know about this great secret and you will often gather around to share in your secret love. This doesn’t mean you are selfish and you would happily welcome new members to your club but it’s as if you were the lucky few that made it into Narnia before the magic died. Even though the hosts of this week’s podcast recommendation would regularly top the iTunes chart they could very easily be described as the Kings of Cult (not a creepy one).

Before I even start, spoilers, but this week’s recommendation is Adam and Joe. The world of Adam and Joe has spanned many years, found many homes and almost become an empire. Prepare yourself for quite the list of podcasts and their respective download links. Unfortunately a few of these feeds have since left iTunes but fortunately, the love for Adam and Joe is so strong that the members of Black Squadron have pooled together their resources and you will be able to find most of the shows archived here but for the shows that are still live, you will still be able to click on the title as per usual.

Adam And Joe On XFM

After their stint on Channel 4 in the UK, Adam and Joe managed to bag themselves a radio show on the now defunct XFM, may it rest in piece. This was the beginning of a legendary career in radio and in their time at XFM, Adam and Joe managed to create a multitude of memorable shows. There was confusion over whether a Jaffa cake is actually a cake or a if it is in fact, a biscuit, a bit more confusion around that damn Crazy Frog (remember that?) and a huge amount of confusion around R Kelly’s entire career, but mainly “In The Closet”. Anecdotes came thick and fast in the segment Anecdoties, Jimmy Big Nuts did a lot of investigating and possibly the most enjoyable segment was the Commentary Corner, in which Adam and Joe rightfully ridiculed the terrible, terrible commentaries from a multitude of films. Ha ha ha, I love it.

The Coke New Music Podcasts

Now whether you care for indie music or not, the most enjoyable part of these podcasts was the bits of waffle floating in and around the music. For some unfathomable but beautiful reason, Coca Cola decided create a podcast that would shine a light on the smaller, yet talented bands around Europe. The reason behind hiring Adam and Joe was quite fathomable and again, these shows provide literally hours of fun. Back to ridiculing again and this time the target is the pointless and superficial world of celebrity magazines. Another notable moment from this short lived show is a competition surrounding coke made music. What does that mean? You’ll just have to listen.

Adam And Joe On BBC 6 Music

This may be a bad idea to start with this statement, in terms of over hyping but Adam And Joe On BBC 6 Music is THE GREATEST RADIO SHOW IN THE HISTORY OF MANKIND! Ok I got a little bit carried away there but the sentiment remains, I genuinely consider this show the best radio show I have ever heard. Everything from the nicknames given to the various listeners, to the silly voices and the loving salutations at the end makes this show something very special. It’s obvious that a lot of time and effort has gone into making this show, along with an enormous amount of love. There is bonus content created just for the podcast and the jingles splattered through the podcast are both hilarious and delightful. Adam And Joe On BBC 6 Music is like the Pixar of podcasting, the humour works on various different levels and it is the perfect kind of show to listen to with your kids.

Two paragraph description for this show, that’s a first! Dr. Buckles and Dr. Sexy form a connection with their listeners in the segment, Text The Nation which also provides for some hilarious chat. There is a multitude of funny characters, like the divisive Boggins (I love Boggins by the way), who is a talking dog with the fascination for sausages and even the Queen makes an appearance on the show, who is I must say, is a lorra lorra fun. Of course the most popular segment is Song Wars, in which both Adam and Joe compete to create the best song surrounding the topic of the week. For the fans there is even a call and response moniker to announce yourself as a member of the squadron and find like-minded people in public, or just people called Stephen.

Adam Buxton’s Big Mixtape

While Joe Cornish went off gallivanting around Hollywood writing for films like Tintin and Ant-Man and even penning and directing the wonderful, Attack The Block, Adam made two more excellent trips to the Big British Castle. The first of these trips was his Big Mixtape, a show in which he would invite celebrities to talk about their musical tastes, a bit like a Desert Island Discs for ponces. Some very impressive names made it onto the show such as Julian Barratt, Sharon Horgan, Supergrass and Emmy The Great. Each guest would provide interesting anecdotes which were separated by snippets of their chosen tracks and some more jingles fashioned by Count Buckulese.

Adam And Edith

Edith Bowman stepped up to fill the seat left empty by Cornballs in Adam’s last visit to the Castle and she does a very fine job. While we all miss Joe, Edith very quickly picks up the gibberish lingo and also brings her own unique charm to the show. The new dynamic duo even have a go at Song Wars which again is separated by some lovely jingles. Kids jokes reign supreme in this short run of shows when the two discuss the best and very worst of children’s attempts at humour.

The Adam Buxton Podcast

September was a very good month this year for returning entertainment, first there was the return of Ray Peacock to podcasting, then Doctor Who of course and finally the brand new Adam Buxton Podcast. This show is a mixed bag of delightful interviews, sketches and again jingly separators. After walking the dog (not Boggins), Adam talks to some interesting people. Depending on the guests, the chat can take more of the friendly, conversational structure or turn out as an entertaining interview. So far Louis Theroux, Lianne La Havis, Jon Ronson, Rob Brydon and Garth Jennings have all made an appearance. One episode concerns the trials and tribulations of the common cold and tells the story of how Twitter can either be a scary or fantastic way to talk to your heroes. I understand that there is a huge back catalogue of shows to dive into hear but I would suggest starting with The Adam Buxton Podcast as there are only six episodes currently, a fine amount to decide whether you enjoy this beardy voice and from the beginning, the show is on fine form. So grab a bottle of wine or drink of your choice and retreat to your nutty room for this beatiful listening experience.
