Disney Animation is heading back to the animal metropolis with a brand-new look at Zootopia 2. The studio unveiled the official trailer today, teasing new characters, hidden corners of the city, and an all-new original song from global superstar Shakira.
The Colombian singer reprises her role as pop icon Gazelle, bringing with her the energetic single “Zoo”, written alongside Ed Sheeran and Blake Slatkin. The track drops Friday, October 10, ahead of the full soundtrack release on November 21.
New Faces in the City
The sequel sees rookie officers Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman) investigating a mysterious reptile underground. Their first encounter is with Gary De’Snake, a pit viper voiced by recent Oscar-winner Ke Huy Quan.
Adding to the star-studded cast are Andy Samberg, David Strathairn, Macaulay Culkin, and Brenda Song as the influential Lynxley family. Fortune Feimster joins the fun as conspiracy-loving podcaster Nibbles Maplestick, while returning favourites Idris Elba (Chief Bogo) and Nate Torrence (Clawhauser) are back to keep order in the city. Newcomers include Quinta Brunson as therapy quokka Dr. Fuzzby and Patrick Warburton as the smooth-talking Mayor Brian Winddancer.
Music That Roars
“Zoo” is produced by Shakira, Sheeran, Slatkin, and Alex (A.C.) Castillo, and is already drawing comparisons to “Try Everything”, the anthem from the original Zootopia that’s been streamed more than 2.7 billion times worldwide. Fans can expect the same uplifting energy that turned Gazelle into a global icon back in 2016.
Ed Sheeran and Blake Slatkin even make cameo appearances in the film as woolly duo Ed Shearin and Baalake Lambkin. The score is once again in the hands of Academy Award-winning composer Michael Giacchino.
Behind the Scenes
Zootopia 2 is directed by Disney Animation’s Jared Bush and Byron Howard—the Oscar-winning duo behind the original film—alongside producer Yvett Merino.
The film hits Australian cinemas on Thursday, November 27, just in time for the summer school holidays.
