Guillermo del Toro Unleashes a New Monster in Frankenstein Trailer

0

The latest trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein has arrived, shifting the spotlight from Oscar Isaac’s Victor Frankenstein to his haunting creation, played by Jacob Elordi.

Over sweeping shots of a lightning-struck tower, Elordi’s Creature whispers: “My maker told his tale. And I will tell you mine.”

A Creature Reborn

Unlike many interpretations of Mary Shelley’s classic, del Toro’s Creature is not a grotesque horror but an eerily beautiful figure — fragile yet formidable. “He needs to feel like a baby, and then he needs to feel like a philosopher, like a man,” del Toro told Netflix, hinting at the duality that defines his monster.

That fragility quickly gives way to menace. In this version, the Creature is forged from the mutilated bodies of soldiers on a Crimean War battlefield, stitched together from a frozen mass grave. As the trailer reveals, he stalks through bullets, rips through ships, and carries the raw fury of abandonment. “If you are not to award me love, then I will indulge in rage,” he declares.

Jacob Elordi’s Unique Approach

To bring this tortured soul to life, Elordi pulled inspiration from unexpected places — including the Japanese dance form butoh and the movements of his golden retriever. “There’s a real innocence in the way she moves and the way that she loves,” he explained, underscoring the balance between vulnerability and violence that drives his performance.

The trailer’s closing moment sees the scarred Creature warning his maker to run — a chilling reminder that del Toro’s monsters are always more complex than they appear.
