After a lot of anticipation, 4A Games has officially pulled the curtain back on the next big instalment in their acclaimed post-apocalyptic saga: METRO 2039. Revealed in collaboration with Xbox, the announcement came packed with a hefty 15-minute developer showcase and a breathtaking 6-minute gameplay trailer that proves the series hasn’t lost its terrifying, claustrophobic edge.
Hitting PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (via Steam and Epic) this Australian summer, METRO 2039 promises a return to the story-driven, single-player FPS roots that made the franchise a standout in the psychological horror genre.
A Unified, Oppressive Underground
The year is 2039. A quarter of a century has passed since the bombs fell, and the remnants of humanity in Moscow are still clinging to survival deep within the poisoned Metro tunnels. But the political landscape has shifted drastically. The once-fractured underground factions have now unified under a single, terrifying banner: the Novoreich.
Leading this authoritarian regime is a familiar face – the legendary Spartan, Hunter, who has claimed the title of Fuhrer. While he promises his followers salvation and a return to the surface, the reality is far more grim. The communities of the Metro are trapped, drowning in propaganda and suffering under his iron-fisted rule.
Enter ‘The Stranger’
Players will step into the boots of “The Stranger”, a recluse haunted by violent waking nightmares. Despite swearing he would never return to the subterranean nightmare, he is forced to make a harrowing journey back down into the Metro.
In a notable step forward for the franchise’s immersive storytelling, The Stranger will be a fully voiced protagonist. The recent gameplay tease showed off stunning visual fidelity, mixing real-time cinematics with heart-pounding mutant combat, complete with the series’ signature jury-rigged weapons and iconic wristwatch.
A Deeply Personal Ukrainian Story
Behind the scenes, the development of METRO 2039 carries a heavy, real-world weight. 4A Games remains a majority Ukrainian studio, and Russia’s ongoing full-scale invasion of Ukraine has directly shaped the game’s narrative.
Developed between studios in Kyiv and Malta, the team has channeled their experiences into the game. The story focuses acutely on choices, consequences, and the ultimate cost of securing a future. While told from a distinctly Ukrainian perspective, the studio promises that METRO 2039 remains an unmistakably authentic METRO experience.
For those looking to support Ukraine during the ongoing conflict, 4A Games recommends contributing to the official fundraising platform, United24.
