Disney & Marvel Games Showcase Recap

This morning Disney & Marvel released their very first games showcase giving us a look at some world premiere games and some updates on previously announced titles. This event is taking place as the start of the Disney D23 Expo, a celebration of all things Disney and serves as a springboard to announce new projects from the house of mouse. This is the first year that games have had such a large role in the company, and this showcase could be the start of a major shift towards seeing more of these characters on our consoles in the future.

Hosted by Blessing Adeoye Jnr, the 25 minute presentation was very surface level with a few world premieres and updates on games we already know about. It’s a mix of console and mobile games with some CGI footage and not too much of actual gameplay as to be expected from titles being announced so early.

The show opened with a title card for Tron Identity. The game is coming out in 2023 and only had Steam listed as the release. The 3D graphics look solid, and while we didn’t get any gameplay footage or release windows, I feel the mere mention of this will have fans of the series desperate for more information.

Next up is Disney Illusion Island. This game can be played in single player and 4 player couch co-op. This beautiful game sees players taking control of Mickey, Minnie, Donald and Goofy in their new 2D cartoon style. The game is exclusive to the Nintendo Switch and has an impressive video, check it out below

Marvel Midnight Suns got a release date. December 2, 2022. We got a closer look at some actual gameplay footage which looks like it delivers on its promise of card based tactical play. The game will also feature a prequel animated series on YouTube introducing the characters and lore this world is set in. Check out the trailer below

There are many Marvel games on mobile right now. Strike Force teased the release of Red Hulk coming soon. A brand new game titled Marvel Snap is trying to be superpowered solitaire. It definitely looks interesting, and the animations look smooth and spectacular. The game will release on October 18 for IOS, Android and Windows devices.

Avatar has two new games coming in the next year. We didn’t get any real new footage for the Ubisoft title which hopefully could come in their presentation tomorrow. They did confirm it is coming for PC and next-gen consoles only. The second game is titled Avatar Reckoning and is a MMO shooter set in the aftermath of the mountains battle. You can customise your warrior, collect and customise your weapons to prepare for your journey. You will join new clans and defend against the RDA forces and monsters of Pandora. The game is online multiplayer and also has a PVP mode. The graphics look great for a mobile game and is releasing courtesy of 20th Century Games. Watch the footage below.

Lego Star Wars : The Skywalker Saga has been a huge hit since its release. The game will get a release titled the Galactic Edition and comes with six new character packs. No word of any new levels or expansions just yet, but if you missed out on this, it is a great time to dive into arguably the best Lego game made to date.

Disney Classic Games are still hard at work not done with reviving The Lion King, Aladdin and The Jungle Book for modern consoles, the studio are tackling Gargoyles next and are said to be doing a full remaster. While no footage was shown, the mere announcement was enough to send Twitter into meltdown mode. More info soon!

Gameloft are working hard on their Disney titles with a HUGE expansion to the recently released Dreamlight Valley getting a Toy Story expansion. The addition will feature a brand new area with Buzz and Woody being added to the pack as companions. Racing game Disney Speedstorm is looking great with a huge Monters Inc track and characters. No release date was given but a confirmation that this game is coming to PC and next gen consoles. Watch the trailer below

Skydance New Media and Marvel teased a currently unnamed project that features Captain America and Black Panther. The vibe is unlike anything we have seen and looks like it may possibly be set around the 1940’s based on the music and vibe. Watch the trailer below

It was a great first presentation for Disney and Marvel games. While it was quite short, it was enough to show some of the huge titles coming from all their current gaming studios in the next year. You can watch the full show via the video below.
