Review – Animal Crossing New Leaf (3DS)

While I do realise that Animal Crossing New Leaf has been out for a while now, I have delayed my review due to wanting to explore as much of this game as I possibly can before delivering a final verdict on this one.

Animal Crossing New Leaf is the latest in the franchise on the Nintendo 3DS. The game was released in June 2013 and has received the highest ratings out of all the AC series, as well as building a large and dedicated fan base who are addicted to this gripping second life game.

In this edition of the game you enter as the mayor of well whatever you want to name your town, and take over mayoral duties of rebuilding and reforming the town. The only thing is you have no money and must pluck fruit from trees, catch fish and net bugs to earn the all important “bells” to purchase town upgrades, house upgrades and loads of costumes, furniture and game goodies.

As well as building and collecting, you can also setup ordinances to change the laws of your town to suit your lifestyle and ultimately the best time of the day for you to play the game.

The great thing about this game is the value you get from it, instead of having a 8 hour playthrough, it literally becomes part of your daily routine. The time and day of the real world is reflected in the game which can be frustrating if you feel like playing at 1am and all the in game shops are closed.

Having the ability to swim around the island is both a good and bad thing. You can collect sea creatures by swimming around which bring in the major bells, but it is a little hard to control and pinpoint dive points, and it gets tedious rather quickly. Wondering how you can take screenshots and get access to them? The 3DS camera connects to Facebook and Twitter for you to upload instantly! New Leaf makes various uses of the Nintendo 3DS’ features, some of which are made available as time passes. Players can visit other players’ towns via local play or online with up to four friends (an optional club membership on Tortimer Island allows players to explore the island with other online players). A Dream Suite feature allows players to download dream versions of other people’s towns to freely explore. The Happy Home Showcase allows players to view the homes of other players encountered on StreetPass, as well as order some of the furniture their house contains. A sewing machine allows players to create QR codes of their designs, which other players can download using the Nintendo 3DS’ camera. Finally, Play Coins can be used to buy fortune cookies, which in turn can be exchanged for special prizes, such as rare items based on other Nintendo franchises

This is one of those games that you just won’t get bored with. There is so much new content constantly being refreshed as well as keeping with the seasons, special festivities constantly rolling through your town as well as new characters moving in, there is always something new to discover. As far as second life games go, this is the best game out there, it is highly addictive and definitely worth checking out on the 3DS.

Animal Leaf New Crossing is out on the 3DS now.
