HBO Max Drops First Teaser for DC Drama Series Lanterns

HBO Max has released the first teaser for its highly anticipated original drama series Lanterns, confirming an August debut for the DC Studios production.

The series stars Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights) and Aaron Pierre (The Underground Railroad) as Hal Jordan and John Stewart respectively – two iconic Green Lanterns thrust into a grounded, murder mystery set in the American heartland. Kelly Macdonald (Boardwalk Empire) also stars.

The show’s premise takes a deliberately earthbound approach to the DC mythology. Rather than a sprawling cosmic adventure, Lanterns centres on a dark and intimate investigation, with the two intergalactic cops drawn into a case far closer to home than either expects.

The creative team behind the series is a notable draw in itself. The pilot was co-written by Chris Mundy (Mindhunter), Damon Lindelof (The Leftovers) and Tom King, the celebrated DC Comics writer whose run on Batman earned widespread critical acclaim. Mundy serves as showrunner, with James Gunn and Peter Safran – the heads of the rebooted DC Studios – among the executive producers.

The first two episodes are directed by James Hawes (Slow Horses), with Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel and Alik Sakharov also directing across the season.

Lanterns will debut exclusively on HBO Max this August. Watch the trailer below
