SDCC 2026: The Green Lantern Corps Hits the Heartland in First ‘Lanterns’ Trailer

The emerald light of the Green Lantern Corps is finally shining on the small screen, but it’s looking a lot grittier than fans might have expected. During a high-energy panel at San Diego Comic-Con today, HBO Max pulled back the curtain on Lanterns, the highly anticipated DC Studios drama series, debuting the first official trailer for the intergalactic police procedural.

The eight-episode season is set to premiere on Monday, August 17, exclusively on HBO Max.

A Cosmic Noir in the American Heartland

Moving away from the space-opera scale of previous iterations, Lanterns feels decidedly more “True Detective” than “Star Wars.” The series centers on a legendary Hal Jordan (played by Kyle Chandler) taking a new recruit, John Stewart (Aaron Pierre), under his wing.

The duo find themselves stationed on Earth, investigating a grisly murder in the American heartland. What starts as a local homicide soon reveals dark, cosmic ties that threaten the entire planet. The trailer showcases a tension-filled dynamic between the veteran Jordan and the disciplined Stewart, set against a backdrop of rural mystery and supernatural dread.

A Powerhouse Creative Team

The series boasts one of the most impressive creative lineups in recent DC history. Developed by co-creators Chris Mundy (Ozark), Damon Lindelof (Watchmen, The Leftovers), and Tom King (celebrated Mister Miracle and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic writer), the show looks to blend gritty realism with deep-cut DC lore. Mundy is serving as the showrunner.

The directorial talent is equally formidable, with James Hawes (Slow Horses) helming the first two episodes. Other directors attached to the season include Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel, and Alik Sakharov.

A Stacked Ensemble Cast

While Chandler and Pierre lead the way, the series features an incredible supporting cast, including:

  • Kelly Macdonald
  • Laura Linney
  • Garret Dillahunt
  • Poorna Jagannathan
  • Jason Ritter
  • Nathan Fillion (reprising his role as Guy Gardner)

Produced by HBO in association with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios, Lanterns is a cornerstone of the new DC Universe being built by James Gunn and Peter Safran.

We are ridiculously excited for Lanterns and this trailer only has built this hype! We can’t wait for the show to come out, and make sure to keep following Novastream for the latest on DC and Lanterns.

Lanterns premieres August 17 on HBO Max.
